London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom. It stands on the River Thames in south-east England at the head of a 50-mile estuary down to the North Sea, and has been a major settlement for two millennia, The City of London, its ancient core and financial centre, was founded by the Romans as Londinium and retains its medieval boundaries.
London's skyscrapers, such as 30 St Mary Axe, Tower 42, the Broadgate Tower and One Canada Square, are mostly in the two financial districts, the City of London and Canary Wharf.
Notable modern buildings in this photograph include 20 Fenchurch Street, dubbed "The Walkie-Talkie" because of its distinctive shape that resembles a two-way radio handset, 30 St Mary Axe previously known as the Swiss Re Building and commonly known as the Gherkin, and 122 Leadenhall Street, which is also known as the Leadenhall Building, known informally as The Cheesegrater because of its distinctive wedge shape.
