Newquay (Cornish: Tewynblustri) is a town on the north coast in Cornwall, in the south west of England.
The town is bounded to the south by the River Gannel and its associated salt marsh, and to the north-east by the Porth Valley. The western edge of the town meets the Atlantic at Fistral Bay.
Newquay has been a major tourist destination for more than a century, principally on account of its coastline and nine long and accessible sandy beaches, including Fistral.
Newquay’s historic harbour is where Newquay got its name – formerly known as Towan Blystra – the town got a new harbour, or ‘quay’ and the name came with it!
The harbour is one of Newquay’s most picturesque locations and even has its own small beach to relax on.
Newquay harbour has a long history; from supporting the Cornish tin mining industry to the heyday of the commercial pilchard fishing era. Small scale commercial fishing still exists but this mostly provides the local restaurants and hotels with a selection of the freshest fish and shell fish
